Give to Samaritan House pantry this season with the Shelby Township Giving Tree

As residents and staff pass by the traditional Shelby Township Hall Christmas tree, a few new ornaments present the opportunity to help them spread good will and cheer this holiday season.

The Shelby Township community can celebrate the Christmas season this year by taking part in the Shelby Township Giving Tree program by donating a non-perishable food item or personal care items such as soap, shampoo or toothpaste to support the Samaritan House Food Pantry.

The community is invited to take one of the Giving Tree ornaments from the Shelby Township Hall Christmas tree and purchase the item from the ornament. Participants can then place the item(s) in the donation box next to the Christmas tree. After Dec. 18, the items will be donated to families in need via the Samaritan House Food Pantry.

“I’m always impressed by the way our community and the township staff come together to make our township a more hospitable place during the Christmas holiday,” Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said. “And the early response to the Giving Tree program has certainly fit that trend.”

The Giving Tree was a collaborative effort between the Shelby Township Supervisor’s Office and the township’s Human Resources Department to raise awareness for Samaritan House Food Pantry, which services much of northern Macomb County.

“We had a resident take an ornament off of the tree before we were even done putting them up,” Deputy Supervisor Brad Bates said. “And later there was a crowd of employees taking ornaments down so they could donate. It feels really good to help raise awareness and help others during the Christmas season.”

The Samaritan House Food Pantry is located at 62324 Van Dyke Ave. in Washington Township. The non-profit program operates as a local food pantry serving north west Macomb County and is a community service organization devoted to serving individuals and families within the community by recognizing their needs and mobilizing the means for dealing with those needs.
