Bi-Annual Shelby Garden Walk

The Shelby Garden Walk now features 7 beautiful gardens! Tickets are available at the Shelby Library and Parks and Rec for $10. The day of the Walk (July 16th, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) $12 tickets can be purchased at Heritage Garden until 1 p.m., and till 4 p.m. at the Shelby Library.

The Bi-annual Shelby Garden Walk is the club’s major fundraiser to support the maintenance of the Heritage Garden for the enjoyment of are residents and their guests.

Macomb County Community Health Survey

“How to Homebrew” with Brooks Brewing

Have you ever considered crafting your own homebrewCraft-Beer.jpeged beer? If so, “Build Your Beer Knowledge” with Brooks Brewing.

Representatives from Brooks Brewing in Shelby Township will be at the Shelby Library (51680 Van Dyke Ave.) on Wednesday, April 13 at 8:00pm. This informational session will cover the basics of homebrewing, including the ingredients required and the art of the process. They will also share how Brooks Brewing does it.

This is a FREE event with no registration required.

 

March is Reading Month!

owwwwwlReading Month is the perfect time to get to know your local library and enjoy a good book.

On Saturday, March 12, the Shelby Township Library is featuring a scavenger hunt for children and their families. This is a great opportunity to explore the library and have some fun.  Participants will receive a small prize upon completion of the scavenger hunt.

The scavenger hunt activity will be available all day during normal Saturday hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm. Come learn about the library and find a good book!

Learn the Art of Watercolor

Local artist, Dara Tolbert Brooks will provide tips and techniques to help other artists visualize and capture an image or concept. Participants will experiment with a variety of techniques in a hands-on session and will leave with a completed piece.

Brooks has exhibited at Grosse Pointe Art Center, the Anton Art Center, the Padziewski Gallery in Dearborn and the Downriver Council for the Arts in Wyandotte. Currently, she is teaching watercolors at the Providence Park Hospital Assarian Cancer Center as part of their Healing Arts Program.

This watercolor session with Brooks will be at the Shelby Township Library at 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 9th. Pre-registration is required and can be completed online, in person, or over the phone.

Love to cook? Maximize your flavor with Chef Jake Williams

If you are an adult or teen in the Shelby Township area looking for a way to better your cooking, look no further than the Shelby Township Library. Aside from the array of recipe books available at the library, local Chef Jake Williams will be giving a presentation on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm. Jake Williams is a formally trained chef who caters his skills to the benefit of Michigan communities. He works primarily for Gleaners Community Food Bank, providing nutritional education to low-income residents in a program called “Cooking Matters”.

cjw02             At this presentation, Chef Jake will teach you the art and science of cooking through lecture and demonstration, including tips and pointers for maximizing the flavor of your own dishes. So, if you’re a food connoisseur, or just looking to tantalize taste buds and create flavors to savor, stop by the Shelby Township Library next Wednesday night and expand your culinary repertoire.

Calling all Jedi aspirants! Force set to awaken at Shelby Township Library

The Shelby Township Library is inviting all Jedi Initiates, Younglings, and Padawans to awaken the force within next weekend. Put your skills to the test through a series of 60-second physical challenges designed for aspiring Jedi above the age of 5. Families are welcome and encouraged to participate in teams.

The Star Wars Minute to Win It event will be held in the Senior Center Craft Room of the Library from 2:00pm – 3:00pm on Saturday, January 16. No registration required.

Meet Mrs. Claus at Shelby Township Library

mrsclausIt’s the holiday season, and there is a special guest that wants to meet your family. Mrs. Claus will be visiting the Shelby Township Library to partake in some holiday fun. The fun-filled day with Mrs. Claus starts at 11 a.m. on Dec. 19 at the Shelby Township Library, located on 51670 Van Dyke Ave.

“Kids always get very excited to see Mrs. Claus,” Librarian Jennifer Sunderhaus said. “It’s also a very nice chance to make some family memories.”

Mrs. Claus has planned out a wonderful day with you and your family. First off, there will be story time with the kids as she tells the story of the Polar Express. Then the whole family is invited to sing some holiday songs and rhymes. A fun session of cookie decorating will follow shortly afterward.

No registration needed. This event is full of holiday cheer and a great for a family outing.

Make something beautiful at Winter Craft Night

Books are meant to be enjoyed, to give the reader passage into a whole new world for them to enjoy. However, what becomes to books when they are broken down, or no longer able to be used, they are made into something more. Come be a part of that wonder and change at the Winter Craft Night.  Winter Craft Night begins at 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the Shelby Township Library, located on 51670 Van Dyke Ave.

The Winter Craft Night will be taking old or broken books that are no longer wanted and making them into something special. Such crafts include making decorative centerpieces for Christmas, making small Christmas trees out of paper, and making flowers out of books.  It is a chance to make something beautiful and recycle.

“This is a chance for books that have lived their lives to be repurposed,” Assistant Library Director Catherine Schmidt said. “You can make them into something new in a creative way.”

All craft items will be provided by the Shelby Township Library, including books and ideas. All that you have to bring is your imagination. No registration is needed to attend.

Holiday fun awaits at the Tree-Trimming event

064It’s time to deck the halls and spread lots of holiday cheer. Get in plenty of practice for your own Christmas decorating and have a fun night with the family at the Shelby Township Library’s tree-trimming. The Tree-Trimming event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the Shelby Township Library, located on 51670 Van Dyke Ave.

This annual event will give you and your family a dash of holiday fun as they help prepare a tree for the holidays. This tree will be displayed throughout the holiday season in the public library, so bring lots of creativity and make the best decorations possible.  Kids will be given clear ornaments to decorate with glitter and other materials. Once finished, the ornament can be either put on the tree for everyone to see, or be taken home to be put on your own tree.

Light refreshments will be provided. This event is meant for children of all ages. No registration necessary.
