Learn How to Make Maple Syrup at the Nature Center

The Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center is hosting their annual Maple Syrup Program in 4 separate sessions on Saturday, April 9 at 11:00am, Noon, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm.

This hands-on educational program will teach you and your family about the natural maple-making process. You will learn how the sugar “gets into” the tree, how to recognize a maple tree, and about the tapping process; there will also be an opportunity to use an old fashioned brace and bit, but, out of respect to the local nature, the exercise will not be done using a real tree.

At the end of the program, participants will gather around a fire to experience the “boiling down” process which makes the syrup. Then, visitors will be served a bowl of ice cream with a warm maple syrup topping.

Pre-registration is required for this event and must be done in person. The cost is $3 per person age 4 and up.  Due to the popularity of this event, early registration and payment is recommended!

Glow Run for the Macomb Special Olympics

Cherry Creek Golf Course is hosting a Night Glow 5K Run/Walk event on Saturday, April 16 with proceeds to benefit the Macomb County Special Olympics.

The event begins at 7 p.m. with registration for adults, a “Kids Run” at 7:45 p.m. and the 5k at 8 p.m. Participants will use flashlights, glow tubes, and other items to navigate the golf course at night. Cost of participation: $25 through April 12, and $30 after April 12. The cost for the “Kids Run” is $5 or $10 with a shirt.

Clean Up Day and Adopt-A-Road Signage

The 2016 Shelby Township Clean Up Day Event will be held on Saturday, April 30.  Registration is from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. in the Lower Level Conference Room of the Municipal Offices at 52700 Van Dyke. The registration location is a new location from previous years. Pizza and beverages will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. back at the Municipal Offices.

All residents are welcome, including walk-ins! We are hoping to see 800 volunteers this year, many from local organizations and businesses that are also part of the Adopt-A-Road program. The Adopt-A-Road program currently has 57 groups that clean designated roads on Clean Up Day each year, but there are still sections of roads available for adoption.

The Macomb County Department of Roads will install Adopt-A-Road signs at the beginning and ending of a group’s assignment to recognize its participation.

Adopt-A-Stream Training and Workshops

Help Your Community Make Informed Decisions and Improve Water Quality!

The Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) is seeking volunteers for their Adopt-A-Stream program. Adopt-A-Stream empowers community members to protect local streams and rivers by monitoring their health. Volunteers are assembled into teams and then assigned a stream site. From there, they are given equipment, data sheets, and a collection protocol. The goal is to gather information on streamside habitats, physical/chemical characteristics and macroinvertebrate populations. Volunteers must attend one 3-hour training session and dedicate 3-4 hours of their time per year, once in May and once in October.

This critical data is then used by the watershed council, municipalities, and the state to assess the health of our streams and rivers which helps guide decisions regarding their protection and restoration.

The CRWC is looking for individuals who would like to coordinate a site team and team participants. Easter Fun in Shelby

The Easter Bunny is on his way to Shelby Township! Come meet the floppy-eared hare at any one of our “egg-citing” events planned for the weekend before Easter.

Easter Bunny Lunch at the Shelby Community Center: Saturday, March 19 at 11:00 am. Join the Easter Bunny and a surprise entertainer for a pizza/salad lunch. Remember to bring your cameras and register for this event! Fee, per person, for ages 2 & up: $7 for residents and $12 for non-residents.

Easter Egg Scramble at River Bends Park: Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 pm for ages 3-5 and 2:00 pm for ages 6-10. A truly festive afternoon will start with an egg hunt, kids will “scramble” to find all the goodie-filled eggs, as well as special “Golden Eggs” that will have a token for a special gift courtesy of Genisys Credit Union. Bring your own basket for egg collection! This is an outdoor, rain or shine, event with no registration and no payment required.

“Egg”citing Easter at Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center: Sunday, March 20 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. This event will feature an egg hunt, Easter bag and egg decorating activities, and a chance to take a picture with the Easter Bunny. Remember to register for this event and bring 6 hard-boiled eggs for decorating! Fee is $4 per participating child.

March is Reading Month!

Reading Month is the perfect time to get to know your local library and enjoy a good book.

On Saturday, March 12, the Shelby Township Library is featuring a scavenger hunt for children and their families. This is a great opportunity to explore the library and have some fun.  Participants will receive a small prize upon completion of the scavenger hunt.

The scavenger hunt activity will be available all day during normal Saturday hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm. Come learn about the library and find a good book!
